Boat bill of sale FAQ
Common questions. More detail on each state page and in the guides.
What is a boat bill of sale?
A written record that a boat changed hands: who sold, who bought, what boat, what price, and when.
Do I need one?
It depends on the state. Some require a signed bill of sale or accept one as proof of ownership when you title or register. Check your state page for details.
Does it need a notary?
Many states do not say it is required. If your state agency says it does, we say so on that state page with the source link. When the agency page does not say, we write “check with [agency].”
What is a HIN?
A 12-character hull identification number, usually on the right rear of the transom. It identifies the hull. Full guide →
Do I list the motor and trailer?
Yes, list them on separate lines. Texas Parks and Wildlife, for example, accepts a receipt as the bill of sale only when it shows the price not including the trailer, because trailers go through the county tax office instead (TPWD, last checked 2026-10-14). Florida says an outboard motor may be exempt from sales tax only when it is separately itemized and priced (FLHSMV, last checked 2026-10-14). Check your state page.
Is a bill of sale the same as a title?
No. The title proves ownership. The bill of sale records the sale. The buyer usually still has to title or register through the state agency. See Bill of sale vs. title vs. registration.
Does this site file my paperwork?
No. This site makes the document only. Filing is done by you at the state agency.
What if my state has its own form?
Use the state’s form if the agency asks for it. Our PDF may be accepted as the bill of sale in some places, but we do not make that promise. The state page names the form and links to it.
What does "sold as is" mean on the document?
The buyer takes the boat in its current condition. Check with your state agency or an attorney if you have questions about what that means in your situation.
Do you include a HIN or VIN history report?
No. No plan includes a history report. The Premium and Complete plans add the documents listed on the pricing page and nothing else. Ask the state agency that registers the boat about ownership and lien records.
