How to write a boat bill of sale
A boat bill of sale records the sale of a boat between two private parties. It names who sold, who bought, what was sold, what was paid, and when. Here is what to put on it.
1. Date of sale
The date both parties sign. Use the actual date of the transaction.
2. Sale price
Write the full price. If the sale includes a trailer, put the trailer price on a separate line. Some states treat the boat and trailer separately for tax purposes — check your state page.
3. Seller information
Full legal name and address. If there are co-owners, list all of them.
4. Buyer information
Full legal name and address.
5. Boat description
- Year, make, and model
- Length
- Hull identification number (HIN) — see the HIN guide
6. Motor description
Make, horsepower, and serial number. Put the motor price on its own line if the state requires it.
7. Trailer
If the trailer is part of the sale, include its VIN and price. See the guide on selling with a motor and trailer for more.
8. As-is statement
Most private boat sales are sold as is. A line on the document that says so confirms the buyer accepted the boat in its current condition. It does not relieve the seller of the duty to be honest about ownership.
9. Signatures
Both parties sign. Some states require a witness or notary — check your state page before signing.
Keep a copy
Both parties should keep a signed copy. The buyer usually needs it to title or register the boat.
